MY REVIEW:
Okay so, yes I am truly dumb. I honestly thought this story was about an alcoholic woman, falling off the wagon and telling her story about her battle with whiskey, literally. Probably should drop in a note for the incredibly small percentage, who may be thinking like me, it's not about that, at all. Ooops.
So let me start fresh, I read the blurb, and for the first time in ages, really loved this blurb, and wanted the book like now. So signed up for the release and waited eagerly for my ARC. I jumped straight in and became hooked straight away, luckily, considering it wasn't quite what I thought. :-/
This story tells the tale of B, a girl who is happy being in the shadow of her best friend, and is concentrating on graduating and quickly getting far away from her home town. A reveal from her Mom, about her Dad, a year before has helped her want shot of her home town even more. What she doesn't expect and plan for, is her best friend getting a new boyfriend, Jamie. The boyfriend that she claims to have seen first, and also likes just as much, if not more. Over time, we would see that the feeling is mutual. So begins a tale that spans many years, and stops at important intervals, where fate, life and anything else possible has jumped in and made things difficult for B and Jamie.
At first I thought I would be disappointed when I realised my mistake, and this book wasn't actually the sort of story I assumed it was. But, by the time I realised Whiskey was actually a person, and not literally the demon in a glass, I was already hooked by the most beautiful and frustrating story ever. I spent so much time annoyed by both Jamie and B, but also so absolutely gutted for the pair of them. Every time you think they would finally get their chance, timing and life decided to mess them about again. It was more than glaringly obvious, that these two characters were beyond perfect for each other, and it hurt my heart every time fate refused them their chance.
The whole theme of 'Whiskey' and the letter that B is writing, was actually pretty amazing, poetic, and beautiful. Comparing her love of Jamie, to the love of Whiskey was perfect and unique. I'm stunned by just how much emotion it took to follow this story. I was so wrung out by halfway through, I felt like I needed to go hunt down a shot of whiskey, and I can't stand the stuff. It just ripped out all my insides, made them all mushy and shoved them back in, haphazardly. Crazy angst and overwhelmingly emotional.
I most definitely recommend this book, oh unless you are actually hunting for a book based on some sort of alcohol problem, maybe not then. But otherwise, go grab this, it's earth shatteringly good!!
