REVIEW - Plaything, Volume Two - Jason Luke & Jade West

TITLE - Plaything, Volume Two

AUTHOR - Jason Luke & Jade West

Synopsis:

Part two in the Plaything series.

The clock is ticking.
I'm holed up in Hell, destined for sale as a rich man's plaything.
They've beaten me, they've bullied me, but they haven't broken me. Not yet.

There's only one man standing between me and a life of misery.
The man they've instructed to train me... to make me willing... to make me a good product... Robert.

He's trying to teach me the art of submission, and I'm trying to learn. I tell him I've got this, I can do it, I can be the woman I need to be to get through this horrible mess alive.

What I haven't told him, is that it's becoming a whole lot less about the lessons, and a whole lot more about the man. But it can't be. In a few days he'll be gone, and I'll be off to my new life.

My new life without him.
I just pray I'll be ready.

My Review:

Volume 2 of the Plaything trilogy, and we start straight back off at the cliffhanger in Volume 1.
We find out about the mysterious pictures that caused such anger with Robert, and Amy gets her chance to explain.

In this second volume, it's more about getting to know the 2 main characters, Robert and Amy. We find out more about Amy, and her past. We also understand a little more about what it is that makes Amy the way she is. Robert kind of dissects her, without the intention of doing so. It was meant to be just talking, but it's the most information we are given since the beginning.

I would still say Robert is still a huge mystery. Other than the main facts we were given, we don't know a great deal about him personally. What we do find out, is that Robert is obviously blessed with some sort of god given sexual gifts. ;) Yup, it's hotter than hot in this second installment. Also very intense, and everything seems to have a bigger purpose, every reaction is part of a bigger picture. And it would seem Robert has things extremely well thought out halfway through, and a big plan that could find Amy's predicament a little easier to survive. That is if he doesn't get too attached in the meantime.

So on the whole, still enjoying this novella series immensely. This second part was slightly slower in pace, but far more information was given. Small cliffhanger at the end, if you take it that way. Can't wait for the final part.

REVIEW - Burn Baby, Burn Baby by Kevin Craig

Title - Burn Baby, Burn Baby
Author - Kevin Craig

Synopsis

Seventeen-year-old Francis Fripp’s confidence is practically non-existent since his abusive father drenched him in accelerant and threw a match at him eight years ago.

Now badly scarred, Francis relies on his best friend Trig to protect him from the constant bullying doled out at the hands of his nemesis, Brandon Hayley—the unrelenting boy who gave him the dreaded nickname of Burn Baby.

The new girl at school, Rachel Higgins, is the first to see past Francis’s pariah-inducing scars.

If Brandon’s bullying doesn’t destroy him, Francis might experience life as a normal teenager for the first time in his life. He just has to avoid Brandon and convince himself he’s worthy of Rachel’s attentions.

Sounds easy enough, but Francis himself has a hard time seeing past his scars. And Brandon is getting violently frustrated, as his attempts to bully Francis are constantly thwarted.

Francis is in turmoil as he simultaneously rushes toward his first kiss and a possible violent end.

What I thought

Let me start by saying that YA is not my usual genre. I've probably read a handful total, but when I read the blurb of Burn Baby, Burn Baby, something drew me in. I wanted to read this story. And I'm so glad I did.

Francis in a young man in high school, who to put it mildly has not had an easy life. Its hard to discuss his troubles without spoiling the story but lets just say the titles very fitting. Having to live his life in this skin he is now cursed with is not as simple as just getting on with things when one guy makes it his lifes mission to bring him down.
He lives with his mum, who from my opinion might aswell have not even been there and his two brother Paul & Simon, but at home at least he gets to just be, in school its a different matter.

Enter Brandon Hayley, who swiftly became my mortal enemy. He is your stereotypical neanderthal high school bully,  until he escalates to full on psychopath who brought out feelings of protectiveness and rage in me that I didn't even know I had! Brandons chosen victim is Francis, whom he refers to as "Burn Baby". From slamming into lockers, to punches, to name calling. He seems to always be on France, but thankfully Trig, Francis' best friend is never far away and often has to step in and defend.
These two have a fantastic friendship, they have their ups and downs but the way they deal together with Francis' depression is so lovely.
' "I've had eight years with this face. Eight years.I know how people are around me. You can't just say everything will be fine. You're not inside here." I touch my heart like a melodramatic idiot. Like a melodramatic drunk idiot. "Until you live in here, you don't have a voice about THIS." I move my hand around my face to indicate the THIS i'm talking about. The Burned bits.'
Francis meets a new girl in school named Rachel and he's not sure if he is being punked. She's nice to him a way no one else is. She is interested in what he has to say and what he does. She's different too. Maybe not on the outside, but different enough for them to build a beautiful relationship. Of course here comes Brendon again ready to destroy the small piece of happiness France has found. In the most dramatic way possible.
"Out of shock, I start to bawl. It's like it's the first time I realize how close I came to complete catastrophe."
I didn't expect the language or the violence that happened towards the end, but it was such a fitting way to finish.

Release Blitz - Hearts on Fire by Cole Jaimes 1st Feb

Title: Hearts on Fire
Series: Heart’s Revenge #2
Author: Cole Jaimes
Release Date: February 1, 2016

Synopsis:

AIDAN
Of course it was never going to be perfect.
Of course it was always going to be wrong.
When Essie Floyd snuck out of his apartment in the early hours of the morning, Aidan Callahan pretended he was still out cold. The truth was he’d never even fallen asleep. How could he, when the girl he should never have developed feelings for, a girl he never thought he’d get, was finally lying in his arms?
It was obvious she was going to run.
Ever since she walked into his office, she’s playing games.
Now only one question remains:
Will she stop playing long enough to realize this thing between them is real?

ESSIE
How could she do it?
How could she enjoy it?
Guilt is a wicked thing. It will never leave Essie be. It’s not the intense, incredible sex that’s tearing her apart, though. Sex has always been a weapon, a tool, something to be used as and when necessary. No, it’s not the sex.
It’s how she felt when Aidan was inside her. How she felt when he kissed her so deeply. How safe she felt when she woke in his arms.
Her wretched heart has betrayed her, and not only that. It’s betrayed her brother, too. Now, the only way to make amends is to focus on her original plan:
She must break Aidan Callahan at all costs. If she doesn’t, she’ll never be able to forgive herself.

Our Review

Lucas Black is a cop, a good cop. He dedicated his life to his work, his wife and his child, until he loses his wife and child in wildly different ways. He falls apart but slowly begins to put himself back together by honouring his much loved daughter, and searching for his wife. The long search for his wife leads him to the path of the Hells Knights MC more than once, but little does he know, the significance of getting on the wrong side of these guys until one night on a run, he meets a girl who has been damaged by an unknown enemy to everyone.
Ava was taken to be broken, to cause chaos, but its not just the MC whose life her tormentor has messed with it's the life of the kind man who found her, and hence. Pandemonium ensues.
" Its why he's been calling me more than usual. It's why my mom has had that look in her eyes, that worry. Something is going down and that something has just caught up with me. "
I ADORED the MC Sinners series so much. I've read them multiple times and even bought them in paperback (I only do that with my absolute loves), so when I heard the second generation (the sinners kids) were getting their own series I was beyond thrilled, and pandemonium did not disappoint.

Ava is MC president Jacksons daughter, it may be 20 odd years later, but Jacks is still the fiercely protective alpha we knew before. It was lovely catching up on him and the other guys and obviously meeting their kids, who will also be getting future books (I hope).

Lucas and Ava have an interesting dynamic, there are only a few years between them, but the difference in the maturity levels are vast so when Lucas calls her "Kid" it feels right. There's this scene by the bath, that really sealed these two for me. They're dysfunctional, destructive and shouldn't be together and yet they are and they belong together.
"  'You know what I think, Detective?' I say removing my hand. 'I think you'd have dimples if you smiled' 'Ava' he says, his voice resigned. 'Mmmm?' 'Stop Talkin.' 'Okay Lucas.' 'Okay Kid.'  "
This is a lot lighter on the sex than previous Bella Jewel books, or more specifically than the MC Sinners series, but that actually doesn't detract from the sexyness. Somehow, it just works. And I want a Lucas in my life.

REVIEW - Fringe Benefits - Natalie Alder

TITLE - Fringe Benefits (The Tapestry Series #4)

AUTHOR - Natalie Alder

Synopsis:

When William Becker, owner of a prestigious race horse farm, strikes a deal with Watchover Farm it puts him in touch with the farm’s beautiful broodmare manager, Leslie Scott.
Just released from prison, Leslie’s dangerous ex-boyfriend is out to get her and a disgruntled former barn hand of William’s is only too willing to help him get to Leslie, the fringe benefit of William’s lucrative deal.
If she escapes this killer, will she escape the next potential killer waiting in the wings?
Can William handle all that comes with loving Leslie?

My Review:

Fringe Benefits (Book 4 in the Tapestry Series) by Natalie Alder was a great read!
This is the story of William Becker, owner of Bridgetown Pass Farm. William raised his three children Cole, James, and Audra on his own. William’s children want to see him in relationship since their mother passed away.

William received a phone call from Myrna at Watchover Farm about a proposal, if Jericho does well in the races.
The owner Leslie Scott meets William and they seem to have an attraction for each other. When Leslie returned home she was in a tizzy.  Another character that we meet is Leslie’s sister, Anne.
The story unfolds and it gets really interesting.  There is some action, love, sexy scenes, laughter, a little bit of sadness, and hope.

I've read this series from the beginning, but this one is really touching. I felt so many emotions, which is what makes a book a great read in my opinion.
I liked reading all the details about William since this is his story. There’s nothing I wouldn't change, all the characters involved need to be there.

I really like how Natalie incorporates some parts of the other three books into this one.  Natalie’s writing style grips you from the beginning and I don't want to stop reading. I'm not sure if there’s going to be another story in this series, but I’d hate for it to stop as I enjoyed reading about the Becker Family!

I’d recommend this book to anyone who likes to read books about romance, or with a farm family mixed in, but I’d start at the very beginning with Crewel Work!

Parts of the story I liked:

One of my favorite parts was when Sara and Audra made a nice gesture when naming their children. It made me say “aww”, and I smiled.

"He's stunning. Simply Stunning. Dark hair with a bit of curl, brown eyes, and amazing lips."

"Angel, don't you ever doubt how special you are. You deserve to be cherished and adored. Now, I'm sorry he broke down your confidence but what he did to you was because of his own insecurities. I see the beauty in you and thank you for sharing that with me because God, Leslie, when we are together it's pretty damn great."

"Man, poor girl. You really protect when you protect. "I know. I went a little overboard. But I love her something fierce."

"Oh, baby. This isn't an interview. I appreciate knowing more about your cancer and prognosis, and I'm glad it's so good, but it's not your cancer I'm hoping you'll let me love, it's the woman inside."
