Title: The Stand-In Boyfriend
Author: Emma Doherty

About The Stand-In Boyfriend:
Livy Chapman is in love with Jessie Stephenson. It’s that simple. She has been for years but he only see’s her as his best friend. His best friend who copies her homework, relies on her to bail him out of trouble and who he hooks up with other girls in front of.

Enough is enough and when Chase Mitchell, star of the soccer team, and all round Mr. Popular steps in and convinces her that they can do each other a favour by pretending to date, Livy is just crazy enough over Jessie to agree to it.

I mean, Chase is just her stand-in boyfriend. Nothing could go wrong. Right?

Our Review:

Oh boy! I was not expecting that! The Stand-In Boyfriend is the perfect YA novel. There is drama and romance. There is angst and confusion. And the hormones? Yep got that too. If you like to lose yourself in a good YA novel, take a chance on this one.

What could possibly go wrong in a fake relationship? I mean the feelings are fake, aren’t they? Livy has been in love with her best friend for as long as she can remember. There is only one problem. He doesn’t really see her as anything more as a friend. When Chase, Mr. Popular himself, comes along and offers up a plan that could get them both what they want, she would be crazy to deny him right?

Livy is such a teenage girl. I mean that in the best possible way. She is insecure, shy, and has a strength she doesn’t realize yet. She is such a sweet character, even if there was a point I wanted to slap her silly. She reminds me of the young girls I mentor. They are young and naive. Very single minded and still so inexperienced. Then you have Chase. He is amazing. I love how even though he is popular, he is also down to earth. He is not cruel for the sake of being cruel. Add in the fact that he is a soccer superstar and well that’s all she wrote!

Teenage love at it’s best. Little touches and simple kisses heat up these pages. Add in the whole getting to know you phase which often leads to feelings bigger than planned and you have the perfect heat.

The writing style of this book is great. The story is told from a single point of view. The pace of the story is steady. I really could feel the high school vibe throughout the story. There were some twists in this story I did not expect. Not reading from Chase’s point of view really held some secrets from us, but in the best possible way. It was what was needed for this story

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I was reeling after finishing it. All I wanted to do was go back and reread the book over and over. I am in love with these two characters and would love to see a future glimpse of them. I think it is safe to say that I would recommend this book to others.
