REVIEW - The Vilka's Servant - Pearl Foxx

TITLE - The Vilka's Servant
AUTHOR - Pearl Fox

BLURB:

Kladuu is a planet full of shape-shifting clans.

It’s also the best-kept secret from the clans’ greatest enemy: Humans.

Vera is the sole female engineer in her department aboard the Zynthar International Space Station. Fighting against sexist prejudices is the only battle Vera has known until a band of rogue aliens attack the space station, taking her and a group of women hostage. It’s a battle between life and death when Vera and the women are forced into servitude on an unknown planet full of shape-shifting alien wolves called Vilkas. Vera will do anything to escape, but the Vilka she works for is protective and loyal … and far too attractive.

Rayner is Beta of Clan Vilka on Kladuu. It’s a position he puts before all other aspects of his life, including love. But the more he gets to know his beautiful human servant, the more he recognizes the flaws in his clan’s way of life. Amidst the stirrings of a servant uprising, another serious threat lurks in the shadows, waiting to destroy all Rayner holds dear—including Vera.

When Rayner’s duties to his clan and his Alpha fall in direct opposition to protecting Vera—to protecting his mate—he will stop at nothing to keep her safe. Even if the cost is betraying his people.

Even if the cost is his life.

Emma's Review:

Vilka's Servant is more than just a sci-fi novel. It's the best sort of fantasy/sci-fi hybrid.
We start with Vera, who we learn is an engineer on a space station. Not long into the book she is kidnapped and taken to another planet, Kladuu. Kladuu is explained as a planet in which the occupant clans live within to avoid the evil monsters that roam topside.
Once here Vera meets Rayner and is instantly drawn to him and despite the fact she wants to hate him and everything he stands for she finds herself in a situation where she warms to him and the place he calls home. Rayner is drawn by the same instinct to Vera and together they take on the system of 'government' which is ran by the leader of the clans, the alpha. On this journey they come across bad people, bad monsters and have to deal with the fact they are different races and have different expectations.
The descriptions given about the planet and the people are really in depth and create vivid imagery which really helps to imagine the scenes unfolding. I found myself really rooting for them both but also sympathising with the positions they found themselves in.
Pearl has a great way of storytelling and the novel is different from anything I have read before which is hard to get. It is unique, enthralling and interesting. Every incident and conflict point was a surprise, something different and unpredictable.
I am really looking forward to picking up the rest of this series. I am dying to find out what happens with Rayner and Vera.
I highly rate this book and the way Pearl's writing flows so naturally makes it a very easy read. I can see that there is huge potential in this book and the author.
