Blog Tour & Review - Barking Up the Wrong Tree - Juliette Poe

Things in Whynot, NC have gone to the dogs, and that’s just the way the town’s only veterinarian, Laken Mancinkus, likes it. No matter if she’s up when the rooster crows, or working until the cows come home, Laken never leaves an animal in need. So when a gorgeous Yankee comes begging for help herding some wily goats, Laken is up to the task.

Jake McDaniel is looking for a tax break, and what better way than to take up…farming? This ex-football player turned businessman turned unwitting goat farmer is up to his knees in goat drama. Runaway goats, dehydrated goats, and a baby goat that wants no one other than him, Jake needs more help than he cares to admit. Good thing the sexy veterinarian is right there to coach him on how to be a farmer. The only problem is, Laken’s not looking for anything more than a good time, while Jake is looking for his forever girl.

Will the baby goat, and Laken, be enough to get Jake to stay? Or will he take his tax break and hoof it back to Chicago? One thing is for certain…what happens on the farm doesn’t always stay on the farm.

OUR REVIEW:

What an awesome and heartwarming novel! If you love cute romantic comedies, then Barking up the Wrong Tree is the perfect novel for you. This book has everything you need in it. There is plenty of heat, romance, adorable little animals, a hot male, and a quirky female. Add in all the hilarious scenes and you have yourself one wonderful little book to keep you entertained.

The plot of this book is much like most romance novels. What takes this book to the next level, is the way the author transforms the story. Yes, this is a boy meets girl book, but it is also real life decisions and complications with a side of humor. I feel this makes this book relatable to the readers. Not every relationship is perfect, and this book shows that. There comes a time when you have to decide if it’s worth fighting for.

Laken is a great character. She is so spunky. I love that she is so stubborn because she reminds me of me. I also love that she doesn’t just give in to anyone’s whims, even her own sometimes. Her past has been haunting her and it was interesting to see how she would handle her present while overcoming her past. Jake is a gorgeous character. I mean I would love to fall for a rich man who also cares deeply about animals and really is not afraid to get dirty. While he seemed to think he knew what he wanted, he had his own little self-discovery to go through.

The heat in this book is muted from most books that I have read, but honestly it was refreshing. So often authors focus on the intimate parts of the book that they lose sight of the story. I like that the author used flirting and implied intimacy to showcase the relationship between these two. I wish I had seen a little bit more, but it didn’t take much away from the novel.

My favorite part of this book is Herman. More specifically, the fact that this author totally wrote parts of the story from his point of view. It is such a charming way to include such an important part of Laken in the book. Seriously, Kudos for this because I think this was the cutest way to include him in a unique way. The pace of this story is steady and I loved all the minor characters as well.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It is obviously part of a series, but can be read as a standalone, as that is what I did. I really enjoyed the characters and really hope to see more books about Darby and Colt and maybe some other minor characters included. Overall, great job!
