Our Review:

If you love hockey and romance, then this is a MUST READ! Breakaway is an amazing sports novel. I knew I had to read it when I read that the main male plays for Tampa Bay. Living in Florida, I immediately felt a connection to the book. This book has romance, heartbreak, and drama. Minor disclosure, there is some discussion of cheating so read with caution.

The plot of this book was refreshing for me. I am so used to reading sports novels in college, that I was excited to jump into a NHL book. I was not disappointed. This story has just enough of the sport to feel authentic, but not so much that you felt it was overwhelming or that you would be lost if you don’t know anything about the sport. I love that the main female actually doesn’t know anything about the sport. I feel that’s why this story works.

The characters in this book are written really well. Mark has insecurities that stem from his past and present. Being in the spotlight always causes some insecurities because it is really hard to trust people. Add in his past, and you knew he needed to develop! I loved watching his journey. Stevie has her own insecurities. She has been stifled for years and this is the first time she has been able to branch out and rediscover herself. Her journey is just as important as Mark’s is.

Hot alpha males rule this world. I am just going to say that. Mark is hawt! He brings the heat in this book. I loved how he opened Stevie up. The chemistry between these two was explosive. If you like heat in your book, then this book would be perfect for you. It has just the right balance of heat and story.

I was really happy with the writing style in this book. The pace of the book was perfect! I really liked that the story highlighted the hockey world. I felt a connection to the book because of this. I grew up watching hockey so it was important for me for this book to be accurate. I was happy to find that it is. I also like how the author discussed some tough topics such as insecurity and cheating. I feel the author did a good job of representing these topics.

Overall, this is a wonderful story. I am in love with hockey, so this was the perfect story for me. I loved how real this story felt. I can imagine someone in the spotlight reacting the way Mark does. I also can see a woman like Stevie surviving the situation she had to go through. I think this was an amazing story with spectacular characters. I would recommend this book to others.
