Review & Excerpt Tour - Downfall - Jay Crownover

From New York Times bestselling author Jay Crownover comes DOWNFALL, a sexy, standalone contemporary romance! Check out all the stops on the tour, and grab your copy today, or read in Amazon KU!

About DOWNFALL:

Solomon Sanders doesn’t have time to fall in love. Until a stunning, skittish, single mother forces him to pause and recognize just how empty and hollow his busy life has become.

From the start, it’s been ingrained in Solo’s DNA to fight.

Fight for what he believes is right.

Fight for the people he loves.

Fight for the traces of good in a place which tends to be filled with a variety of bad.

Fight for survival, so at some point, his life will quiet down and find a normal pace.

He wasn’t ready for the impact his secretive, shy, obviously out of place new neighbor was going to have on him. And never in a million years was he prepared to fall head over heels for her and her young daughter.

Now, he’s facing the most important, and the hardest fight he’s ever fought… the battle to win Orley’s damaged heart.

Orley Vincent’s heart is full of fear, leaving no space for love. Until a big, brash, brawler of a man forces his way in and makes her realize facing her fears is the only way she can ever be free.

From the start, Orley was groomed to believe she wasn’t good enough.

She wasn’t the perfect daughter. Or student. Or girlfriend.

But, she has always been the best mother she could be to her daughter, Noble.

Keeping Noble safe has always been the one thing she was determined to do, which ironically, is how she ended up on the wrong side of the tracks, living next door to an unlikely hero. Orley’s a woman on the run. She had no idea her frantic sprint was going to land her in the tattooed arms of a man ready to teach her how to fight for herself… and for love.

 OUR REVIEW:

Crownover is a new to me author and I could not put this book down, from the moment I started reading Solo, Orley and Noble captured me and held me hostage until the last page was turned.

Orley is a single mum who is scared and running from something that she is keeping very quiet on; she has moved into a very run-down area that is not 100% safe. Taking a risk, she is left in a bad position and that is where Solo comes into play, saving her not only once but several times they start a relationship that continues to grow. When Orley’s past comes back to take the one thing she will do anything to protect Solo teams up with some friends to save the woman he has fallen in love with.

I highly recommend this book, the chemistry between Orley and Solo is set to high and add in his amazing knight in shining armour status and affection for Noble I was done for.

I look forward to reading more of Crownover’s work.

EXCERPT:
~SOLO~
“I’m not anyone’s savior, Orley. Don’t get that confused.”
She sighed again and pushed herself up off the floor. “I’m not confused. I’m incredibly lucky.” She sounded like she felt anything but lucky. “I want to do something nice for you. I have limited options, but if you want to come next door for dinner one night, Noble and I would love to have you.” She waved a hand around my kitchen, “I may have noticed you don’t keep much of anything edible on hand when I was looking for the coffee.”
Guiltily, I glanced at the abandoned bag of tater tots on the couch. “I’m on the go a lot. I usually just grab something I can eat on the run. Plus, I can’t cook.” My mom was a great cook, though, or she had been at one point. I couldn’t remember the last time I’d had a home-cooked meal. “Do you cook?” She was so young, it was hard to picture her slaving over a hot stove on the regular.
Orley nodded. “Sure. I mostly throw stuff together geared to the palate of a toddler, but I’m sure I can figure out something adult appropriate for one night. I really owe you more than I can ever repay. Being a good neighbor is the least I can do.”
I did a mental rundown of my week trying to find a hole where I could fit her in. Not for the first time a wave of exhaustion washed over me when I realized how every hour of my days were packed. It shouldn’t be nearly impossible to eke out a night for something as easy as dinner. Finally deciding I was just going to have to skip a training session or get up even earlier to work on school work, I told Orley I would be over on Wednesday night.
She nodded at me and took a step forward. I went to move out of the way so she could get out of the small space without feeling crowded, but she caught me completely off guard when she walked right up to me and wrapped her arms around my waist. I felt her soft breath against the base of my throat and her soft hair brush against the bottom of my chin. I reflexively put an arm around her shoulders and returned her embrace. If she tilted her head back just a little, there wasn’t enough self-control in the world for me to keep my mouth off of hers. I would kiss the shit out of her, even though I knew it was the last thing she needed.
“I’ve never had anyone like you in my life, Solo. You terrify me.” She hugged me hard enough I had to bite my tongue to keep the yelp of pain from my jacked-up ribs at bay.
“That street goes both ways, Orley. I’ve never met anyone like you either.” I never thought I would to be honest.
She let me go and took a deep breath. She was halfway across the room when I realized something. “Hey, what about you. You never told me your last name.”
She stopped by the door, her back to me. For a minute I thought she didn’t hear me, but then she pulled the door open and called softly, “I’ll see you on Wednesday night.”

She slipped out the door without another word, leaving me with one more piece of a puzzle I was determined to put together. Figuring out my pretty neighbor was going to have to wait. I still needed to shower and drive out to see my mom. My obligations were never-ending and usually I liked being busy enough I didn’t have to think about much of anything. Lately, I found myself resenting every minute that took my attention away from the mysterious redhead I couldn’t stop thinking about.

LUCY

I’ve always held my own.

I’m determined.

I’m happy.

I’m strong.

Not right now, though. Right now I’m weak.

Pathetic.

Because I screwed up, I screwed up in a way I can’t fix.

I destroyed someone.

I stomped on a heart.

I broke the one rule all women should live by.

There is no coming back from it.

Yet, I can’t seem to find the strength to stop.

Nicolai. That name. It ruins me.

I tried to stay away.

I fought so hard.

I knew what he was. Who he was.

I knew what he had done.

But I can’t seem to stop.

I try and forget how his hands felt against my skin.

How his lips felt on mine.

How his body moved. God, his body.

I’m a terrible person.

A terrible sister.

But take me to hell, if you must, so long as he comes with me.

DAMON

Get a girl, they say.

Find a woman, Damon.

Settle down.

I have one thing to say to that. Women equal drama.

You know it’s true.

I don’t have time for drama.

Why can’t I be different? Why do I have to follow the trend?

My story doesn’t have to match theirs. Hell, when the time comes I’ll find the
right one.

Until then, I’ll stick to friends. Yep. I can do friends.

Lucy. She’s my friend. My best friend, if I’m being honest.

She’s strong.

She’s determined.

She kind of holds my pieces together. And I hers.

In the most non-romantic way I can think of.

She has plenty of her own drama, she keeps us both busy.

She’s like a sister.

No, scratch that.

Lucy, she’s the kind of woman who could run a country.

Hold a family together.

That’s the kind of person she is.

The lady of the house.

Yep.

That’s our Lucy.

Knights Lady.

Our Review:

“Is she really Knights Lady? 3 stars”

Lucy has made a mess out of her life and the only person willing to hear her out is her best friend Damon. Will Lucy take a risk on love or will she let family obligations stand in her way? Damon is feeling the pressure to settle down but he doesn’t know if it's what he wants. The only one who really gets it is his girl Lucy. Only one way to find out what happens for these two.

Knights Lady was a solid story I will give Jewel that. But it wasn’t what I thought it was going to be. I thought where it was titled Knight’s Lady it would be Damon’s love story but it was mainly just his friendship with Lucy. I like when stories don’t go the way I expect them to but Knights Lady just left me wanting something else. I did love catching up with the other Knights and can’t wait to see where Jewel goes with the next story.

Our Review:

Seducing the Billionaire’s Brother is book 3 is a standalone in the Billionaire’s Brothers series, having not read the previous books I was worried that I would be missing out on something important; never fear you can read Connor and Faith’s story without worry.

Faith and Connor met when they were just kids at summer camp, they struck up a one of kind friendship that blossomed as they got older; Connor stepping in as a knight and shining armour and Faith saving Connor from himself. When Faith is given as ultimatum, she does what she knows is best which leads her to the other side of the world with a new surname.

Valentine is a new to me author and I personally enjoyed reading Connor and Faith’s story, I always felt that I was waiting for the net scandal to happen and somehow ruin their amazing friendship. It was nice to read a story where both characters don’t doubt each other have full trust.

I look forward to reading more from Valentine.

Excerpt

Panicked, I
sit up, gaping in disbelief at the person standing in the doorway. I grasp at
the sheet, I frantically try to cover the most crucial bits of me, while
feeling completely mortified. He, on the other hand, can’t wipe that damn smirk
off his face.
What the fuck?
His head
cocks sideways and his lips twitch into an even bigger grin that I’d probably
find sexy—if I wasn’t two knuckles deep and showing him more of me than any guy
has seen of me in a long time.
“Well, I
have to say,” he drawls in a low, husky voice, “women do a lot of shit to try
to get my attention, but this is definitely up there as the most original.”
I can’t
even comprehend what he’s saying, because I’m frozen on the spot and trying to
work out what the hell he’s doing in my room. Is this some kind of sick joke?
Is he planning on attacking me? My eyes dart to the phone on the wall, but they
switch back to him when he walks closer.
Fuck.
He steps
out of the shadows, giving me a better look at his face and—
Double fuck.
What the
heck is the lead singer of The Vision doing in my hotel room?
I don’t
know whether to laugh or cry, so my body decides to do both. I can’t think
straight, but I’m doing my best to stop freaking the fuck out so I can try to
figure a way out of this mess. I’m so unbelievably embarrassed. And naked,
apart from this flimsy sheet. I should probably get dressed. The problem is,
doing anything at this point feels impossible.
“So, do you
speak?” he asks, jolting me out of my thoughts. “I mean, we’ve established that
you can moan quite well.”
Oh God.
“I had a
friend once, who was mute,” he muses, “we drifted apart because our
conversations were always very one-sided.”
“I am not mute,” I snap, glaring at him.
“Great,
then you can start by telling me what you’re doing.” He laughs and rubs his
jaw. “I mean, it’s pretty obvious what you were doing, I’m just not sure why. Not that I didn’t appreciate the
show,” he quickly adds. “Trust me, I did.” His dark eyes flash with amusement.
“It’s refreshing to meet a girl who doesn’t mind opening herself up.”
What the ever loving fuck…?
How can he
casually crack jokes like he isn’t the slightest bit embarrassed about walking
in on me? I don’t trust myself to speak, so I just glare at him.
“Can I get
you anything, like a drink?” he offers. “Or maybe offer you a hand…?”
“You could offer me some privacy?” I suggest, my
body shaking with rage.
“Privacy,
huh?” He grins at me. “Sure. I’ll turn around.”
He’ll turn around?
“Or you
could leave, the same way you came in?” I retort.
“You seem pretty agitated over there. I’m
guessing I interrupted the finale? Have you thought about trying some
relaxation breathing?” he suggests, “it’s supposed to be great for relieving
tension.”
“Are you
done?” I growl.
“Are you?”
he asks. “Maybe you should be the one leaving?”
A surge of
anger hits me. Why the hell should I be the one to leave when he’s the one in
my room? I wrestle myself up so I’m sitting on the edge of the bed, my knuckles
white from clinging onto the sheet so tightly. While I’m at it, why am I the
one who’s embarrassed?
If I can’t
get myself off in the privacy of my own room—
I stop,
mid-thought as I look around, an uneasy feeling creeping into my stomach. The
clothes scattered outside the bathroom. The freaking guitar leaning against the
couch that I somehow neglected to notice. The champagne. The note…there was no
upgrade.
I’m the one in the wrong room.
And I was
seconds from climaxing all over Brix Wilson’s bed.
My heart
pounds as a trickle of sweat makes it’s way down the back of my neck. I swat it
away, while trying hard to think up an excuse for being in his room that
sounds even half plausible.
Who am I
kidding? There’s no getting out of this. Not without me looking like a complete
fuckwit. Sure, they gave me the wrong key, which makes this whole mess not my
fault, but as if he’s going to believe that.
I take a
deep breath and reach for my clothes, somehow managing to dress myself while
showing minimal skin. Not that he hasn’t seen everything already.
God, he’s seen more of my than I have.
I stand up,
nearly losing my balance. My legs feel like jelly, so even walking feels like a
hard task, but I have to get out of here. And the longer I wait, the harder
escaping is going to be.
“I have to
go,” I mumble.
“So soon?
You went to all this trouble of getting in here and performing for me, and now
you’re leaving? Where’s the harm in hanging around for a little longer?” he
presses. “I was looking forward to seeing how far you’d go.”
I stalk
over to the door, avoiding all physical contact with him. He can’t wipe the
smirk off his face, but I can’t let myself think too hard about what just
happened, or I’ll lose control. As I close the door behind me, I hear his voice
call out after me;
“What, I
don’t even get an encore?”

OUR REVIEWS:

Louise's Review:

Sticky Situation is book 7 in the Awkward Love series and like always I couldn’t put this book down. Johnson has delivered another jaw hanging tale.

When all you want is some alone time to reach your ultimate goal you find yourself in a fancy hotel room trying to finish what you started; being walked in on by a high-profile celebrity offering to give you a hand is not how Hannah wanted her night to go. Nate was always fixing problems, he didn’t expect this time he would meet Hannah someone who he clicks with and also, he can’t lie to.
Will Nate’s deceit catch up to him and ruin everything?

I highly recommend this book and all of the previous books in the Award Love series, while they are all standalone stories each one is a fantastic read and leave you wanting more when you have turned the last page.

I cannot wait to get my hands on more of Johnson’s work in the future, she has certainly cemented her spot as a fantastic rom-com author.

Erin's Review:

I was super intrigued about this book thanks to the blurb. I just couldn’t imagine the circumstances that would have to happen to have that blurb. Ms. Johnson did manage to get the stars aligned (or misaligned?) to have such things occur. This was the first book I’ve read of hers; and despite this being book seven in the Awkward Love series, it can be read as a standalone.

Our plot follows Hannah and Brix as their lives intertwined in the most absurd manner to begin with, then in more professional, than personal ways. It’s a crazy situation rockstar romance, I guess. The blurb was a great set up for the book, which was full of situational comedy and awkward romance. I enjoyed all the plot twists though it felt a bit too contrived, and hopefully not possible in real life.

Our heroine is Hannah...a lovely woman who needed to let off some steam, alone. Why a hotel room? Because she’s a good sister and has been letting family crash at her place; which leads to a most unique way of the reader being introduced to her sister and niece. She seems like a well educated person who has a career path, if a bit down on her luck and love. So when she takes some time to herself, the last thing she expects is to be given the wrong hotel room, and encounter a sexy rockstar. Especially a sexy rockstar she then has to work with professionally that week! Brix is a tortured soul, a creative artist, a floundering brother. He’s got issues that have issues, and they all seem to come to a head and need dealt with at once. Our first glimpses of him paint him as a narcissistic rock god, but we learn more about him and his mysteries issues; he becomes a man trying to right wrongs in all the wrong ways. Both have some serious family issues that crop up to create problems for both. Neither handle them well, and it makes them both lovely flawed characters, but also over the top flawed and a bit unbelievable.

Despite all the reasons the two should not work, Hannah and Brix have some crazy chemistry. The relationship is fraught with pitfalls and potholes, wrong decisions and misinformation. But they don’t lack in pheromones. I wasn’t totally on board with all of their relationship antics as the outrageous situations made it a bit hard to believe, but it seemed to work for them.

The pace of the book was fairly steady, fast paced comedy and romance, but the details were hard to keep straight and the ancillary characters a bit hard to keep track of. I wanted to keep reading and see how the story played out; but the believability made it hard to get sucked in.

Ms. Johnson wrote a funny book, and I enjoyed the overall plot. But there were too many over the top moments, not just things that would happen for a rockstar; but also their family, work, and in life. They were all great writing, but in such a combination didn’t work for me. I think I liked the blurb better than the book.
