Review:

The Scheme is a wonderfully written romance novel by Mia Kayla. Mia Kayla does a wonderful job with writing romance novels with a bit of humor and that is relatable to readers.

I was a little iffy about this book at first as one of its main characters, Brian, is also in another one of her books, Marry Me for Money, but I really did enjoy this book.

The Scheme can be read as a standalone, but if you want background information on Brian, I suggest you read Marry Me for Money first. With that being said, The Scheme is just as good a book as Marry Me for Money is, which I loved as well.

The plot in this book is different than the plot in Marry Me for Money, which I was happy about. Sometimes authors recycle the bones of a plot and add in different fluff to make the book seem different, but still able to fit into a series. I was very happy that Mia Kayla did not do this. A lot of times I get bored and feel like I am reading the same book over and over. Mia Kayla was sure to make The Scheme a refreshing new tale, with some of the minor characters from the other book. I absolutely loved the plot and I especially loved the idea that love blossoms in unique ways.

The characters are developed very nicely in The Scheme. Like I said before, Brain was not my favorite character when I picked this book up. While he was not a villain or anything, I just didn’t seem to connect with his character in Marry Me for Money which led me to be worried about how I would feel about him in this book. Kendy is also featured in Marry Me for Money. I was surprised that it was these two minor characters that ended up in a book together. With that being said, I loved them together. I loved Kendy to begin with so I really liked that she got her own book. While Brian was busy developing, I was busy falling in love with him. This book changed my mind on him completely.

Mia Kayla sure knows how to bring heat. She has no qualms about describing every detail either. I really enjoyed this about the book. I also liked that the intimate scenes did not seem forced. With the topic of the book, I expected 80% of it to be these intimate moments, as that’s what authors usually do, but I was pleasantly surprised that Mia was able to include just enough intimate scenes to feel organic with the story while also developing the characters and allowing the story to progress naturally.

I really did like this book, but there were a couple of minor things that bothered me about this book. First, I felt that Kendy would have consulted Beth a bit more. I don’t want to give anything away so I will just say that I feel it would’ve been a little more realistic if Kendy had called Beth and had a discussion with her about Brian in the beginning of the book.

I also felt that Kendy was such a strong character, but at times I felt she was acting and sounding a little immature. I just felt if she was taken a notch up on the maturity scale that it would’ve been more enjoyable for me personally. I also felt that the minor characters were a little bit too minor. I really felt that Kendy’s nurse friend was just a blip on the radar rather than in the story.

Trey, another minor character, was a little more than a blip, but not by much. I felt these two characters could’ve been used to develop the story more and make them feel like a set part of the story rather than a passing wind. With that being said, I really enjoyed this book.

In conclusion, The Scheme is a wonderful book that I would recommend to friends and family. I did enjoy the content of the book and I was surprised by how much I really liked the characters. I also loved the romance of the book. It shows that even simple things can be done to make a woman feel loved and appreciated. I also liked how it was told from dual perspectives. I cannot wait to read more from Mia Kayla.
