My Review:

So, I succumbed to the madness that has been Mud Vein. It's all anybody has been talking about this week. I had never read a Tarryn Fisher book before Mud Vein. I had The Opportunist on my 'To Read' pile for ages, so I knew of her but I hadn't heard about Mud Vein till all the craziness started. 
I went on to read the description and didn't really feel any more the wiser for having read it. So I guess I was going into it blank, as I hadn't been reading the reviews already out. I had read a snippet from Tarryn, stating what she wanted the readers to get out of the book, but that didn't really enlighten me just made me all the the more curious. So, I jumped in head first and started this bizarre trip down an exceedingly dark road where I just knew my head would be messed with for the duration. 

The story starts straight at the action, no preliminary background of characters or their stories. No easing in gently to what is going to be a very turbulent reading experience. Senna Richards, a semi recluse Author hits her 33rd birthday, she is successful, attractive, and extremely closed off. The start kicks straight off with her waking up from what would appear to be a drug haze. She is in totally unfamiliar surroundings and freezing cold. 

Now this is one of those stories where, I really can't and don't want to say too much about it without there being spoilers. Giving away a story like this would ruin it, you have to go in blind and have no idea where it is going. I think that held a huge attraction to me, I had no idea what was coming or the outcome, or if it even had a HEA. I knew nothing. To be honest, if someone had summarised this story as being a thriller, a suspense or even a psychological mind messer. I probably wouldn't have read it. I don't normally go for genres like that as I don't get a great deal out of them. Trouble is, I don't think you could put this book into just one category. It had elements of so many different genres, and I couldn't really pinpoint one as being more predominant. 

So, anyway I can't say a great deal about the actual story but what I will say is, firstly; The writing was amazing, It was written so well I could feel everything the characters felt, pain, hurt, anguish. It was all so clear, concise, and easy to get absorbed into. When you break it down, there's no prettiness, flowery words and silly pet names. It's everything you need and no more, to understand what they were going through. Hard to explain unless you read it. The intelligent thought that went into the planning of this story floors me, every little detail was perfect. It all had it's place in the big picture, so that coming to the end, the only word you can utter is "wow", while your brain tries to piece back together.

The characters were brilliant. I felt like there was no way I could understand and relate to Senna, It didn't matter though, the journey had me accepting her for who she was, I understood certain elements about her but the rest was a mystery. Isaac, I loved. Right from the start, he was so perfect for Senna. It was killing me that she didn't accept it. Wouldn't allow herself to accept it. He was always there for her, every single time. Plus, he certainly is the absolute best person to have around in a crisis. I just wanted to keep feeling so sorry for Senna and everything she went through and what was thrown at her, yet I don't think she was the sort of person who wanted to be felt sorry for. The pity felt wrong somehow. 

To say the story and the characters left an impression on me, is an understatement. I've been walking around in a daze since I finished it. I can't get my head around it, I don't think I'll try. I just feel like someone just put my head through a washing machine, and I'm left all weird. If leaving a dark imprint was part of it's purpose, then it definitely worked. I will still be sat here thinking about this book for quite some time. 

If you like to feel like you're constantly on edge, having to question every little detail. Plus constantly holding your breath and wiping the leakages from hopefully just your eyes, and not your nose as well. Then this book is perfect for you. It will leave a dark and depressing imprint on you, but in a incredible, questioning everything way. If your hoping for the perfect ending to make everything seem happy, so you can be at peace with the dark parts. It's not going to happen, at least it didn't for me. Yet, I understood why it had to be that way. If you manage to get through it without feeling like poo, then well done, I'm still sat here looking stupid even now. 

Amazing, well earned 5 stars. This Author writes so beautifully I now know I have to go and read her others books to see if the impact is the same.

New To Me Authors - Future Reads

Over the last couple of weeks, I've been running between social network sites a great deal. Trying to set up my pages etc, and have found myself coming across quite a few new (to me) authors. Most I've never heard of, but they seem to be having a huge impact on readers/bloggers etc. It made me realize, I need to branch out more and try to read more by some Authors I've not heard a lot about. So, I've been given some recommendations and I've done some general stalking around the book world, and have started compiling a list of Authors I want to take a look at. Once I have a few on my list, I will pick a random one each week and select a book of theirs. This is my attempt at broadening who I read and follow. 

List to be compiled as I find new Authors or I'm recommended some. 

Mud Vein Madness!

Ok, so if I'm honest. I've not read anything by Tarryn Fisher before. Her book The Opportunist has been on my To Read pile for ages. But everywhere i look lately, everything has been about her upcoming release Mud Vein. Now, obviously I'm hugely intrigued and want to run and jump on the bandwagon. So today on my travels I see Mud Vein has been released early and everyone is going crazy. So I guess I'm going to have to go get that and have a little look.

1st, Saturday Series Catch-Up Book

Right then, as i have set myself the task of catching up on some series. I better choose my first one in time for next Saturday (12th April) Tomorrow is a wee bit too soon for me. ;)

So my first catch up is quite easy as I only read book 1 back on March 11th, but it did have a crazy ending that i need to find out what happened.

Review: Summer Sky

I was extremely lucky to be a beta reader for this book, and feel as if I have followed the characters journey for quite a while, and have loved every part of it.
Sky Davis is the down to earth, straight talking girl from next door. She's naturally gorgeous and has an equally natural personality. After being cheated on by her lame and lacking boyfriend of 5 years, she decides it's time to take a break. Leaving her home, ex boyfriend and job. She heads down to her childhood retreat for some thinking time. 1 car bump and crazy misunderstanding with cottage double bookings later. Sky has met 'The' Dylan Morgan. Although Sky has no idea that Dylan Morgan is the frontman for rock band Blue Phoenix, and that Dylan is also running and hiding in his childhood retreat too. So begins a sweet and funny meeting that grows into intense, hot chemistry in their holiday bubble. Away from the world they both have ran from.
Right from the beginning, I loved Sky. She's quirky and feisty and so normal you can't help but love her. The one liners she always manages to throw back at a shocked then secretly smitten Dylan, are so quick and sarcastic it's perfect.

"A dog ran out in front of me"
He looks into the road. "What dog?"
"The dog's not here now. I don't think the dog realised it needed to be a material witness and ran off" I narrow my eyes at him and he deliberately looks me up and down.

Dylan is the typical hot and brooding Rock star to start with, but after spending time with Sky, he soon starts coming out of his moping mood and starts to remember how to live.

"The water's bloody cold!" I step back and rub the water off my arms. "How can you stand swimming in this?"
"Because it makes me feel alive! Free. I'd forgotten how awesome this place is. I can breathe again."
Dylan's half talking to himself, I can't help but smile too. His happy enthusiasm is contagious.

The time spent at the cottage is charming and sweet, yet the undercurrent of building feelings makes all the moments really exciting. Waiting to see what they do.
Of course this dream bubble has to eventually burst. Sky has avoided looking to see who Dylan really is and after a glimpse at the real Dylan one day, she decides to take a look. Everything turns up a notch after that and it all goes from sweet yet steamy holiday crushes to intense real life with a harsh inside view of a rock star life, with stalking tendencies and ugly bad secrets waiting to come out. A week hiding in a secluded holiday cottage, indulging in a holiday crush soon becomes a distant memory for Sky and Dylan, but one that will stay with them forever.
There is a huge change halfway through when they come back to the 'real world' and you get to know the real Dylan and the people he spends his life and time with. Some very colourful characters and all pretty memorable.
What I really loved about Summer Sky is how you go from characters that are so like real people, people you can relate to and laugh along with.....

"Is this your underwear?"
I snap my eyes open, spilling my wine as I jump to my feet. Psycho-sexy driver stands at the bottom of the stairs with a pair of my knickers hanging off his long fingers. Not even nice underwear. The sort reserved for unsexy times of the month.

To the gorgeous, fantasy characters that I love to read about in my book escapism. There's so much going on in this book and it's all entertaining and addictive to read. Part sweet and easy to read romance, part rock star sexiness story. A mixture for everyone. Plus knowing the story continues on in a series is even better. There is so many characters I want to see more of and so much more to find out about. It will be exciting to go back to the Blue Phoenix world again.
A very justified and well earned 5 shiny stars!
