What a whirlwind! Reckless King took my breath away. I really enjoyed the first book in this series, but this book was so much better. Reckless King is a stand-alone novel in this series and can be read alone. You will see others from the first book in this series. This book devastated me. Not only does it have romance, heat, and some forbidden themes, but it has complete heartbreak.
The plot of this book interested me. In the first book we meet Heath. We actually get to see the first bar scene from Mak and Declan’s point of view, which intrigued us to want to read this book. Heath has a lot going on in his life. A lot more than he ever let on. Watching him meet this girl, Kara, and have it change him was an interesting way to take his story.
Kara is such a strong character. She is loyal and determined. She is also insecure. Her past has lead her to do things for others because she feels she is supposed to instead of living life for herself. I liked watching her realize the meaning of life. Then you have Heath. He seems so easy going and fun, but we get to see a whole other side to him. A side I never expected lingering beneath his surface.
The author was not shy with these two. They jump into the physical side of things fairly quickly. Things are hot as heck between these two, but they keep on heating up as the characters open up more to each other. This aspect of this book was perfect for these characters.
The writing style in this book is good. I loved being able to check in with past characters and get a glimpse of possible future characters. Heath is such a dynamic character. He drew me in from the beginning. The pace of this book is steady. The story is told from a dual point of view. What I will say is this author totally broke my heart. I mean full on ugly cry. I am not sure I can forgive her for that, but I sure will try.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It has everything I like in a book. There is plenty of heat and romance, but there are also some very serious topics discussed. My heart broke at times and at other times I was smiling so hard my face hurt. I cannot wait to read the next book. I think we all need to know what happened with Avery and Emmett.

I absolutely adored Reckless King. I loved the whole idea of Heath and Kara. Reckless King satisfied my need for a sports romance but didn’t revolve only around the sport. The characters were well rounded, and I fell easily into the story.
Heath is all about keeping calm everyone but on the ice. He didn’t know that his short encounter with Kara would lead to more. But after one taste he needed more of her. The odds were stacked against them, but he’s never found a problem he couldn’t fix. Will he be able to convince Kara they belong together, or will he always be left wondering what if?
Kara has never felt like she truly belonged without trying. She loves her family, but she feels the need to be perfect for them. Then she meets Heath and nothing about them is perfect but the way they make each other feel. What will happen with their personal lives and their professional lives collide? Will they be able to survive the outcome unscathed?
These two were perfect for each other. They were the perfect ying to the others yang. Add in the secondary characters and I was sold from the very start. When I turned the last page, I was happy for Heath and Kara but wanted the next book in the series. I cannot wait to see what Hughes has for us next. Dive in to Reckless King, you won’t regret it.
