REVIEW - Invoking The Witch - Lindsey Jayne

Title: Invoking The Witch (The Faction Series #1)
Author: Lindsey Jayne

Synopsis

A group of women have a dark and forbidding goal in mind.
They want to raise hell, and they’re murdering witches and sacrificing their unborn babies in the name of their deadly beliefs.

General Lucas Drake leads a unit of elite, vampire warriors known as the Faction, tasked with safeguarding the apprised human population against anything immorally supernatural. So when Lucas gets the call that pregnant women are being murdered in a manner suggesting witchcraft, he enlists the help of paranormally-adept DCI Amelia Ellis and her team.
Together they discover a horror with frightening complications involving black magic, death and sacrifice, but to what end? How do they find who’s committing such brutal atrocities with no leads and time running out?

Pregnant Elora Lincoln is a young woman trapped in an abusive relationship. When the abuse turns violent, Elora leaves him, but not before her mentally malicious boyfriend tells her that they are coming for her, and she had better watch out. They will stop at nothing until they get what they want – by any means necessary.
In order to protect her from Daniel she is taken to the Compound – a secured building that houses the General and his team.

But how does Elora fit into all of this? Is she another pawn in this game? The answers lie in her ghostly past.
Beyond scared, she seeks comfort in the arms of Deacon, The General’s second in command. He promises to protect her, but experiences failure when she is kidnapped from right in front of him. After discovering what is in store for her, can Deacon save her in time before she becomes another victim in this dark game?
Can they all stop what’s happening before the coven wins, and Hell walks the Earth?

What's it all about?

So much going on! Set in Northern England (isn't that a nice refreshing change) there are humans, vampires, witches, wolves, the police and some seriously cray cray people!

"Omnes te invocamus. Omnes te invocamus. Afferte, si quid tenebrarum"

What I thought

I  like the occasional paranormal, I like a good thriller and lord knows I love romance. So being offered a book of all three. I was ALL over that!
There are so many characters, that's not necessarily a bad thing as it is a series, so we got an intro to some and got to know others more, I would just be here all day if I started describing them all. So I'll just pick my majors.
Amelia - MY FAVE CHARACTER, a female who doesn't annoy me. She's human but doesn't let her lack of supernatural gifts stop her from being the single most kick ass person ever.

Blake - Could easily be a book boyfriend. He's a kinda smooth talking, protective alpha type but he is funny too! Who doesn't love a GSOH.

Elora - remarkably mature for a 21 year old and yet SO naive "maybe it'll be different when the baby gets here"

Deacon - A very close second to Blake, and by all accounts a very good kisser.

Daniel - Ooohh I hate him. I hated him straight away, and then I carried on hating him, but the end OMG did I hate him!

Cassandra - What a *&@%$#*

So, supernatural types have all "come out" to society long before and so a new law enforcement dept has been set up "The Faction". And a strange murder had occurred with paranormal properties so The Faction and the Lancashire constabulary team up to solve the crime. The crime is a lot worse than anyone expected and it requires everyone and everything they know to pull together and solve it in order to keep people they love alive.
Along the way,  there are some sparks of romance, along the lines of the mates for life theme (and I'm a big fan of the mates for life thing) but rather than rush in and be all "your mine for life, I love you" blah blah blah. They build up, like actual relationships! Again. Refreshing!

"He smiled back at her with joy, hope and longing in his eyes. She turned, and ran to the veranda, pushing the doors open. Throwing caution to the wind, she launched herself into Blake's arms and he littered her face and neck with desperate kisses. Sliding her down his firm body he held her back and stared into her eyes"

Anyway, this is the first book by Lindsey, and you can read a bit of her journey in the preface of the book, and in my opinion its a great debut. I think the only thing that bothered me in the whole book was there seemed to be an excessive mention of Lancashire. And the ending. The ending and I have a love hate relationship. I love it, because its a great ending but I hate it because I need book two now.

"  'I want that baby, Elora. I'll kill everyone you know and love until you give it up to me' he snarled..... Jesus fucking Christ, he's got fangs!

Please Lindsey, may I have some more???
