Jennifer's Review:
What. In. The. Heck. Did. I. Just. Read! That is literally how I felt when I got to the end of Church. I expected a little dirty darkness, but this went well beyond any expectations I had. Wow. I am pretty much speechless. Yet, I have to write this review so I will try. Church is a special novel. It does have some stuff that would be considered triggers so if you have any, best to avoid this one. This is book one in this series and I cannot wait for book two to come out.
Just reading the blurb, I knew this book was going to be different than most. I mean come on. A broken girl willing to kill for him and a man that just wants to kill. That sounds dark all on its own. When you get into it though, you realize this book isn’t what it seems. It is way different that you could have ever imagined. Prepare to have your mind blown.
The characters in this book are way more complex than I am used to. Emma has had a troubled past. All she needs to do is suck it up for a little while longer while she collects what she needs to get away from this place. Getting a degree in the meantime wouldn’t hurt. That plan is great, but once the enigma that is Church strolls back into town, everything changes. Church is the strong silent type. He has so many layers that you are sure that you will never reach the core. Man I loved his character.
The heat in this book is scorching. With a powerful man like Church, it was destined to be that way. Emma adds in her own spice, which only enhances things. The chemistry these two have are amazing. If you like a lot of down and dirty heat, then this book is the one for you.
The writing style of this book is easy to read. The pace is steady. You can feel the buildup start from the beginning of the book. As you read, you are just waiting for the tension to relieve, for the explosion to occur. The characters are written wonderfully. I love that this book is told from mainly Emma’s point of view. We get little snippets from Church, which add a much-needed layer to the story.
Overall, this story is beyond words. I really enjoyed it. While there were some tough subject topics introduced to the story, it was done in a way that felt organic and necessary. I loved this book. I cannot wait to pick the second one up. I just need to know what happens next.
